I first became interested in BMX after watching my son winning races for his latest club, TNT, about 5 years ago. I knew at this point that I would like to have a go! I started to train with Lewis and with the help of some amazing coaches, our skills and speed started to improve. Along with this extra speed, came the increased risk of injury. It wasn’t long before I found myself crashing, breaking two ribs and damaging my sternoclavicuar joint resulting in 16 weeks off my bike! I quickly realised this sport was probably one of the most technical and unforgiving of sports. On returning, Lewis and I progressed to regional level and then to National level, over time, still struggling to keep on top of the injuries. This was when it was first suggested we see The Healing Zone based at Cyclopark. Over the following years, I have had regular sports massage and plenty of treatment and rehab for tennis elbow, damaged toes, muscle strains, and nerve pain due to a back injury. The Healing Zone gave me a pre-hab strengthening programme through the winter and I was feeling fast and strong and preparing well for the National round in Manchester in March 2019. Everything was going very well apart from the fact we did not get enough track time practice. However, I did make the final! In the final race, on the second straight, two riders collided in front of me, leaving me no time to miss them. I hit them and was thrown into the air and was then hit by the bike behind me. After a trip to A and E, an x-ray and triage, I was placed in a protective boot for 4 weeks with a suspected fracture, ankle sprain and severe bruising to my knee. My dream of competing at the National at Cyclopark, my home track, was looking extremely unlikely. I headed straight back to The Healing Zone. Cheryl tested my knee and ankle fully and got a second opinion on my X-ray which confirmed there was no fracture. We devised a rehab plan and started that day! We had 4 weeks to get me race ready! Ice became my best friend, we needed to reduce the swelling and increase my movement. Over the next 4 weeks we worked hard, doing all my rehab daily and by the Tuesday before the National, we tested out my knee and ankle on the track. Whilst it was not 100%, I was confident I could race and I don’t think anyone could have stopped me! The morning of the race, I had one last check, treatment and some mental preparation at The Healing Zone and headed off to join my team. I am pleased to say I made the A final on both days! Only just missing out on a podium! Without the knowledge and expertise of The Healing Zone, I definitely would not have raced at my home track with all my friends and family able to watch. Their care, rehab and attention to detail was second to none. Thank you!!
