Our society revolves around technology and it is having a noticeable impact on our lives, not just socially, emotionally, psychologically but physically too. Mobile devices house a lot of our social life at present! From Instagram to games, Netflix to email—and we just can’t get enough. The increased sedentary lifestyle we appear to be living sees many of us looking down at a phone, tablet, or other electronic device for too long – leading to a term we refer to as ‘Tech Neck’. A form of repeated stress injury, Tech Neck occurs from excessive watching or texting on handheld devices over a sustained period of time. The average human head weighs10 to 12 pounds in a neutral postural position, as you forward bend and/or protrude your neck closer towards the screen, the effect of that weight on the spine increases exponentially, causing muscles in the neck and surrounding supportive muscles to tighten and cause pain. Signs and Symptoms of Tech Neck: Symptoms occur over time from excessive use of these devices and often cause: Neck stiffness: a limited range of motion of the neck, which may be one-sided or affect both sides. Neck and upper back pain: this may vary in severity from a dull ache to severe sharp pains. Muscle spasm or muscle tightness a cramp like feeling in the area which can also be tender at certain points. Headaches:

at the back of the head, temples or top of the head. Can it be prevented? Like many injuries, there are preventative measures you can take to ensure you are doing your best to reduce the risk of getting Tech Neck: Get the height right– Have the mobile device at eye level to avoid tilting the head forward Reduce mobile device usage– many devices have the capacity to show you your screen time – when was the last time you checked yours? Regular breaks. Schedule in short breaks after every 20 minutes of prolonged usage. A good nights sleep– make sure you have a suitable pillow, one that supports your neck and helps to reduce further strain. Treatment: Postural corrective techniques including regular stretching and strengthening exercises can be used to help correct Tech Neck and help prevent pain hindering your daily routine. If you recognise any of the above symptoms, it’s always best to seek advice before further implications occur.
