ED FRASER , MOUNTAIN BIKE AND CYCLOCROSS RACER
“So when did you last take a proper break from training then?” Cheryl asked as she dug her thumbs into my protesting quads. “Erm… about 5 years ago.” I replied. And thus our relationship started. We’ve tackled back pain/tension during racing, knee pain, ankle pain, and just general soreness, stiffness and tightness. Along with the ‘relief’ here thumbs have
brought (you’ll see what I mean if you get a sports massage; it can be pretty darn painful but you feel great afterwards), we’ve discussed many ways in which I can rehab and prehab injuries in my own time using bodyweight exercises or simple equipment.
Most importantly through we’ve spent hours picking my mind apart. She asks the awkward questions you don’t really want to answer and keeps hitting you with “and when are you going to recover?” so a few years on from her first asking me the question I now plan my recovery first the block in my training around it. I’m less tired, pain free, and just as fast. Life is simply better now and I enjoy my racing more.
Nice little anecdote: The last time I had a session booked, I turned up totally not myself (turned out I was going down with a nasty bug). She took one look at me and said would you just like a gentle massage tonight? “With candles and whale music?” I joked. “Yes Ed, you can have candles and whale music.”
