Swedish Massage was first created by Henrich Ling in 1812. It is a widely known form of massage using the therapist’s own hands to manipulate the body’s tissues and muscles in a series of movements. Five movements are commonly used, effleurage, petrissage, tapotement, vibration and friction. These movements help to relax, reduce tension and stress, aid circulation and remove impurities. Oil is also used to help to reduce friction and stretch muscles. The oil used will usually be a plain carrier or base oil.
A Swedish massage treatment can be either stimulating or relaxing depending on the movements used and the outcome sought by the client.
